ABOUT KATERINA

Having grown up between two cultures, Katerina has had the fortune of learning and experiencing the world through a unique perspective.

Born in the Czech Republic and raised in the US (living in Colorado, New Hampshire and Orange County, CA), Katerina chose to pursue her childhood dream of becoming an architect by studying at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicago, Illinois.

Throughout her five years at university, Katerina gained valuable experience through internships. From working on a historically significant building in the Czech Republic to high end residential architecture in Chicago.

After having completed her architectural degree at IIT she stayed in Chicago for a few years but the cold winters had her dreaming of sunny California. In 2017 she moved back to Orange County where she joined the architectural firm of Morris Skenderian and Associates in Laguna Beach.

Building on her years of experience, Katerina founded Katerina Burianova Architecture Inc. in 2023, bringing her vision and passion for design to life.

When not immersed in the world of architecture, you can find Katerina on her yoga mat, hiking along the California coast or swimming in the ocean.

ABOUT KBA

Becoming an architect was Katerina’s childhood dream, and starting her own business was the perfect culmination of that vision. In early 2023, she took the first steps by incorporating her business and laying its foundation. A few months later, she was fully independent, signing her first project weeks into having her business. The excitement of her first year in entrepreneurship came with signing her initial projects, ranging from small deck repairs to full remodels and new construction.

Owning her business has opened up new opportunities for Katerina to work directly with clients, allowing her to apply what she’s learned and continue growing. She’s passionate about offering a service that values clear communication, where the design process feels personal and collaborative for each client.

LEADERSHIP BEYOND THE FIRM

As the Co-Programs Director for the Association of Women in Architecture and Design (AWA+D), Katerina is committed to advancing and supporting women in the fields of architecture and design. AWA+D is a dynamic organization that encourages professional growth, provides valuable networking opportunities, and promotes the achievements of women in these industries.

At the AWA+D 2024 Symposium, Katerina had the privilege of guiding a dynamic and enlightening conversation as the moderator for the panel discussion on the “Advancing Together Through Partnership”.

Katerina has served as a director on the Laguna Beach Board of Realtors since 2024.

Katerina was the moderator for the Balancing as a Firm Owner panel discussion at the 2023 Mental Health in Architecture Summit.

Katerina is the host of From the Honeycomb, a podcast that dives deep into the world of architecture, design, and entrepreneurship. With candid conversations, she brings industry insights, personal stories, and powerful narratives from professionals shaping the field. Dedicated to empowering women in architecture and design, Katerina uses the podcast to spotlight their unique contributions and create a space for collaboration and community.
